Best Stoner Comedy Movies Every Woman Who Loves Cannabis Should Watch

stoner movies, stoner comedies, weed comedy movie

When you’re in the mood for a cozy solo sesh, an epic girls' night in, or simply looking for an excuse to revisit a cult classic film, there's something magical about the perfect stoner comedy. The best ones aren't just packed with smoke sessions, they're full of unforgettable funny moments, unexpected high-jinks (haha) and a lot of heart. From iconic female-led comedies to timeless cannabis classics, these are the classic stoner movies we'd happily roll one up for again and again.

1. Smiley Face (2007)

Best female stoner comedy movie

I think we can all relate to having an edible brownie moment that goes too far. And if there were an official patron saint of edible mishaps, it would be Jane F. Played by Anna Faris, “Smiley Face” follows an aspiring actress who accidentally eats an entire tray of cannabis infused cupcakes before embarking on what might be the most chaotic day in cinematic history. It's weird, wonderfully absurd, and criminally underrated. Faris is at the height of her comedic genius in this independent film.

Why we love it: Peak edible panic with a female lead who somehow keeps making everything worse.

2. Booksmart (2019)

Best female stoner comedies

No, “Booksmart” isn't technically a stoner movie but it absolutely earns a spot on this list. Olivia Wilde's coming-of-age comedy captures the messy magic of one unforgettable night, complete with drugs, unexpected detours, and the kind of friendship every woman deserves. As besties who co-founded High Herstory, a blog for women who love cannabis, we can relate to creating memories that last a lifetime.

Why we love it: Smart, hilarious, and proof that women can absolutely headline outrageous comedies.

3. Half Baked (1998)

A cannabis movie hall of famer, “Half Baked”, stars Dave Chappelle as Thurgood Jenkins. The movie follows Thurgood and his stoner friends as they accidentally become unlikely weed entrepreneurs while trying to bail their buddy out of jail. It's endlessly quotable, delightfully ridiculous, and still one of the funniest movies ever made about flower. We also love that it takes place in NYC because this was way before legalization of weed came to New York which means the movie captures that OG stoner vibe we love.

Why we love it: Every stoner comedy owes this classic a thank-you note.

4. Bottoms (2023)

Stoner movies

Chaotic? Yes. Unhinged? Absolutely. “Bottoms” follows two queer high school seniors who start a fight club to impress their crushes, and somehow things only get stranger from there. It isn't centered around cannabis, but it has the exact offbeat energy that pairs perfectly with a relaxed evening. We also love the performances of the whole cast but Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott truly shine in their roles. The movie reminds of those teen movies from the aughts but satirized to perfection.

Why we love it: Camp, chaos, and women causing problems for the plot.

5. Pineapple Express (2008)

favorite stoner movies

“Pineapple Express” is an action movie meets stoner comedy in the best possible way. Seth Rogen and James Franco spend the entire movie trying not to get murdered after witnessing a crime, all while staying hilariously committed to their love of flower. Danny McBride is a scene-stealer in the movie and really had us laughing. This is a classic stoner film that cemented Seth Rogan as the go-to weed movie man and re-invigorated the genre of stoner comedy to brought it to new heights in the 2000s.

Why we love it: Somehow explosions and bong rips make perfect roommates.

6. Dazed and Confused (1993)

Best Stoner Chick flicks

Richard Linklater's nostalgic ode to the last day of school has become essential viewing for generations of weed lovers. Between the killer soundtrack, unforgettable characters, and carefree vibes, it's impossible not to feel nostalgic for those lazy summer days filled with aimless rides with a joint and the future stretched out in front of you. As gals from Texas, “Dazed and Confused” is a classic stoner comedy that stands the test of time.

Why we love it: The ultimate reminder that the best nights are often the least planned.

7. Friday (1995)

Best stoner comedy movies

Ice Cube and Chris Tucker spend one very long Friday trying to avoid trouble and paying back a neighborhood dealer. Funny, endlessly quotable, and packed with iconic moments, this is a must-watch for any comedy fan. We love the performances and the slice of life feel of this stoner buddy film. The chemistry of the cast is amazing and we also love that it spawned the sequel “Next Friday” which might not be worthy of this list but still a stoner comedy re-watchable.

Why we love it: One of the greatest buddy comedies ever made.

8. Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)

This movie feels like someone sprinkled THC into a beach vacation brochure. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo deliver pure joyful absurdity with talking crabs, musical numbers, and enough surreal humor to make you question reality in the best way. We love a good female comedy duo and the two leads in this movie are fan-fucking-tastic together.

Why we love it: Vacation vibes with absolutely zero concern for logic. Watch it on your next vacation with your bestie and we promise you don’t mind that this movie makes absolutely no sense.

9. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

Sometimes all you need is a craving and terrible decision-making skills. Harold and Kumar's legendary quest for sliders remains one of the funniest munchie adventures ever filmed. With an unhinged and high-larious cameo by Neil Patrick Harris, this movie quickly made its way into the stoner movie hall of fame. Another fun fact is that the White Castle idea came about because stoners in the 70’s and 80’s would inevitably end up there when the munchies would hit after a good smoke sesh. Although “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle” might not have aged as well as some of the other stoner comedies on this list, it is still worth watching for some laughs and the great performances by the leads.

Why we love it: Every cannabis enthusiast understands making food your entire personality for one evening.

10. The Big Lebowski (1998)

If your ideal vibe is absolutely unbothered, “The Big Lebowski” belongs at the top of your watchlist. Jeff Bridges' legendary Dude gets swept into a wildly bizarre kidnapping plot armed with nothing but a White Russian, a bathrobe, and an impressive commitment to taking life one day at a time. Equal parts cult classic and stoner philosophy, it's the kind of movie that somehow gets funnier every time you watch it. Sometimes the Dude really does abide. The Coen Brothers really made their mark on cinema with this one.

Why we love it: Every time we watch this movie we catch something new. It always grabs our attention and the performances by Jeff Bridges, John Candy, Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman are out of this world.

The best stoner comedies aren't always just about weed, they can be about friendship, ridiculous adventures, unforgettable characters, and embracing life's beautifully unhinged moments. So grab your favorite strain, queue up one of these classics, and remember: the snacks should always be purchased before the edible kicks in.
